COALITION
For civil monitoring of the construction of the bridge Vidin-Calafat and its influence on the local communities

DECLARATION

We, 21 representatives of civil organizations, business, local authorities and media from Vidin and Calafat, lead by the best interest of both communities, have been united in Coalition for a civil monitoring of the Danube Bridge between our cities and accompanied activities. The goal of our union is to protect in the maximal extent the local interest, derive benefits from this - the largest investment in the region, and prevent the potential harms. It is well known that Northwest Bulgaria and Southwest Romania are within the least developed regions in the frameworks of thier national economies. Naturally, the hopes of the local population will be that the Bridge will change the socio-economic situation to be better sustainable. In comparison, there are sufficient examples that investors and implementers of similar large infrastructure projects fail to answer to the interest of the local community.

With the present declaration we wish to work with all engaged in the Bridge construction - donors and financial institutions, both governments, the company-implementor, as well as respective subcontractors for combination of our interests, which will be in benefit for local communities, employment, and economical potential. In our efforts we will rely on support from the local authorities in both cities, on having related institutions and organizations, as well as on the local patriotism of all citizens of Vidin and Calafat.

The civil monitoring will oversee:
- Strict observance of the clauses and engagements under the contract, took by companies implementers of the project;
- Observance of the international standards for transparency, reporting and control in execution of projects with sufficient social influence.

With the result of this initiative, with common affords of central and local authorities, business, non-governmental organizations and media we want to achieve a business climate favorable for investments and economical development of the region.
